Well, sort of a tutorial.  This pertains to 3ds Max only – as that’s the only thing I’ve tested in so far.  3ds Max 2010 has a built in Collada exporter, if you have an older version you’ll need the plugin.

It’s necessary to reset the pivot point every time you make location changes:

Set it to 0,0,0.

The second and last step prior to exporting is to reset the Xform:

If you’re running 2010, it doesn’t seem to matter which export you choose (COLLADA NextGen or Autodesk Collada) they both work though the NexGen seems to work better.

Once you get it into the Blue Mars Cloth Editor (Cloth > Make Cloth) you might need to check the opacity, diffuse color, and diffuse map in the Material Editor.  View > Open View Pane > Material Editor:

For some reason, cloth sometimes gets imported with zero opacity, black diffuse color, and rarely do the texture maps get put in the right folder. The cloth editor will use .TIFF or .dds files.  Make sure you have Shader 2-sided checked also.

So, workflow:
-create clothing
-reset Pivot
-reset Xform
-export with NextGen COLLADA
-import via Make Cloth in the Blue Mars editor
-fix materials settings
-check for fit
-tweak in 3ds
-reset Pivot
-reset Xform
-re-export

Hopefully the new Editor, rumored to be out soon, will be a bit easier.
