Microsoft Photosynth is Open and Free!

Yes, I said free! For now anyway.

What is Photosynth? Well, it’s a photo stitcher. If you’ve ever taken multiple shot panoramic pictures and then tried to stitch or meld them all together into a seamless whole, then you’ll love this new application. What’s really cool about Photosynth is that you can stitch together many high resolution images making it possible to zoom way in on bits and pieces of the whole, and it’s all done automatically for you!

We’re pleased to announce the first full release of Photosynth, available now at photosynth.com. Photosynth takes a collection of regular photographs and reconstructs the scene or object in a 3-D environment. For those of you who have seen the videos or tried our tech preview, you could experience synths that we made in the lab and get a feel for what Photosynth is and how it works. But now, for the first time ever you can create synths from your own pictures and share them with your friends. Explore great synths from others or create a few of your own.

I don’t know what they’re doing on the backend of this thing, but pictures load incredibly fast, something that would be a lovely addition to many virtual worlds. And did I mention it’s free? Who can resist free stuff from Microsoft? :P
